Simple Rules For a Great Website Design

Design and content are hands down the most important aspects of your website.  A good design tells people they have found the right place and should stick around to hear your message.  On the other hand, nothing makes someone hit the back button faster than a sloppy design.   

Here some simple rules you can follow to insure your site doesn’t look like it was done by an amateur.  

-Use 2 font sizes.. 3 at max
-Use 2 font types
-Use 2 colors 3 at max
-Use 1 or 2 alignments for both text and pictures.

Never use music… there is no exception to this rule.

Keep everything clean and neat.  …Look at apple.com, they have some of the best design in the world. 

Same with Google, it’s very simple and clean. 

Popular magazines are a good source for design examples.  Look at the layouts.  Where is the picture in relation to the words?  Do they use captions?  What fonts are they using?  Pay attention to all the small details as they make the biggest difference.    

As humans we tend to like things that come in threes.  If you splice your page into thirds and add content divided into those thirds it will look much more appealing to the eye. 

For example, have a picture take up one third of the page and text take up the other two thirds.  Again start looking around, you’ll notice many magazines and professional websites are using the rule of thirds. 

Don’t make your heading to big.  Ask yourself what do you want people to focus on when they first get to your webpage?  If you’re in sales it should be your headline.  A test is to glance quickly at your webpage.  Look away and think of the first thing you noticed.  This is what your reader sees first.  Make what ever it is count… don’t make it a picture of yourself!       

The design of your website is equally as important as your content.  A sloppy design makes you lose creditability and sales.  A neat clean design builds trust and keeps visitors around to read your message. Don't underestimate your design.
